A Triumph at BAJA

The students of IIT Hyderabad proved their mettle once again, as a talented and enthusiastic team of 23 students named ‘Titans’, successfully cleared the prelims of BAJA competition organized by the prestigious Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

The team which composed of undergraduates and constantly helped by 2 postgraduates namely Vatsailesh and Anil Vakle was guided by 2 faculty advisors. It was divided into groups of 3-4 members each sharing the workload. The main objective of this competition was to design, create and race an off-road vehicle. They broke the convention of typically heavy buggy as they reduced its weight from 210 Kg to 195 Kg and improved the acceleration by installing a new transmission system. The competition was conducted in 2 phases namely:

  • Designing
  • Fabrication

Initially, they faced problems ofanxiety, along with unavailability of materials, lack of technical experience but they overcame them by working in a systematic way including scheduled meetings, brainstorming sessions. The teammates worked even harder during vacations to get the job done.

After being the only new IIT to clear the first round in first attempt itself, it certainly boosted their morale and they certainly hope to participate in sub-sequent versions of BAJA and achieve much more in future and set up an example to our juniors.
