The Chemical Engineering Department of IITH, is one of the largest and oldest departments in IITH. The department has a predominantly young faculty counting to 13 members in all. At present the department offers an Under-graduate B-Tech course in Chemical Engineering as well as a Post graduate M-tech program. It also offers PhD program in chemical engineering.

In all, there are 74 students pursuing their Undergraduate studies - number of students pursuing their M-tech and –number of students on their way to doctorate under this department. The Department focuses on importance of research and innovation and tries to foster, inculcate and nurture the sense of scholarship and independent inquiry in its students.

The Department has well equipped labs facilitating research in lot of exciting avenues. Presently the department hosts state of the art facilities for catalysis, bioengineering, mineral processing, and surface and interfacial science. The department is in the process of setting up other state of the art research labs in the areas of drug delivery, fluid mechanics, and fuel cells. With the new permanent campus nearing the end of construction, the department is expected to shift into its new building within a year or so. The new campus is being equipped with labs that boast cutting edge technologies and ultra-modern facilities extending the research prospects to a new dimension, here at IITH.

The major research avenues in this department at IITH are at present are Energy systems, Catalysis, Process and Stochastic control, Drug delivery, Polymer chemistry, Fluid Mechanics, Mineral Processing, Cardio-Vascular mechanics, Molecular and Cellular bio-engineering , surface and interfacial science, and theory and computation.

The department is also engaged in fostering collaborations with other academic institutes and industries; to name a few Imperial College (London), KIT (Germany), UIUC (USA), IITK, and University of Cape Town (South Africa), Tega industries Ltd Kolkata, DRDL, IMMT Bhubaneswar, and Vedanta, Hindustan Zinc Limited Udaipur.

Many exciting research projects are being undertaken at present , like Bio mass treatment using catalytic hydrolysis , De-polymerization of lignin from industrial paper waste, modeling of on growing Plaque including Atherosclerosis, Lattice Boltzmann simulation of multiphase flows using Graphics Processing Units (GPU) s, conversion from Synthesis gas to methanol to dimethyl ether in single step(DST funded project) and various others.
